“Cartas al Padre Jacob” es la entrañable y conmovedora historia de Leila, una presa condenada a cadena perpetua que ha sido perdonada. Cuando es liberada de prisión, se le ofrece un trabajo en una casa del párroco apartada; ella se traslada a allí contra su voluntad. Leila está acostumbrada a cuidar de ella misma, así que experimenta sentimientos encontrados cuando empieza a trabajar como ayudante personal de Jacob, el pastor ciego que está viviendo en la parroquia.
“Letters to Father Jacob” is a warm-hearted and touching story of Leila, a life sentence prisoner who has just been pardoned. When she is released from prison, she is offered a job at a secluded parsonage; she moves there against her will. Leila is used to taking care only of herself, so she experiences conflicting feelings when she starts working as the personal assistant for Jacob, the blind pastor living in the parsonage.

Durante mucho tiempo, había querido hacer una película que retratara la fe de una forma cálida y genuina. Quería contar cosas sobre nosotros, la gente normal, la necesidad de gracia y de perdón en nuestros defectos cotidianos y la esperanza y el respeto por la vida que no siempre es la que nosotros habíamos deseado. Pero durante mucho tiempo, sentí que no había encontrado la historia perfecta para la película. No mucho antes ya se había, literalmente, colado por la ranura de mi buzón. Si no me hubiera tenido que estar en la cama recuperándome de un resfriado (y de un proyecto cinematográfico que acababa de “caerse”) probablemente no hubiera tenido el tiempo necesario para leer lo que un desconocido escritor me había dejado. ¡Gracias a Dios que lo hice!
La historia de un encuentro entre una mujer que acaba de salir de prisión después de una cadena perpetua, y de Jacob, un sacerdote ciego, me tocó la fibra; por fin una historia que retrataba, con profunda seriedad y un sutil sentido del humor, la fe cristiana como yo la entiendo: como una fuerza transformadora de la vida diaria, una fuerza que nos inspira y nos fortalece.

For a long time, I had hoped to make a film that would portray faith in a warm and genuine manner. I wanted to tell about us, the average people, in need of mercy and forgiveness for our daily shortcomings and about hope and respect for life that isn’t always what we might have hoped for. But for a long time I felt that I hadn’t found the right story for the film. Not before it literally thumped through the mail slot. Had I not been lying in bed and recovering from a cold (and a film project that had just failed), I probably wouldn’t have taken the time to read the screenplay that came from an unknown writer. Thank God I did!
The story of an encounter between a woman who has just gotten out of prison after serving a life sentence and Jacob, a blind priest, touched a nerve; finally a story that portrays, with both deep seriousness and subtle humor, the Christian faith as I know it: as a transforming force in our everyday life, a force that inspires and encourages us.
