La magistrada Jeanne Charmant ha sido asignada a un complejo caso de malversación de fondos. Los cargos apuntan al presidente de un poderoso grupo industrial. Cuanto más avanza la investigación, más consciente es la jueza del alcance de su poder. Al mismo tiempo, y por las mismas razones, su vida privada sufre una crisis y se tiene que enfrentar a dos cuestiones ineludibles: ¿hasta dónde será capaz de ejercer su poder? y ¿cuánto tiempo puede pasar una persona normal sin verse embriagada por ese mismo poder?
Magistrate Jeanne Charmant has been assigned an extremely complex case involving the misappropriation of public monies. The charges are being brought against the chairperson of a powerful industrial firm. The more her inquiry progresses, the more the magistrate begins to realise the full extent of her power. At the same time –and for the same reasons– her private life hits a crisis and she finds herself faced with two unavoidable questions: how far can she exert her power? And how long can the average person have such power without becoming intoxicated by it?

Nacido en París en 1930, estudió literatura y fue director colaborador de Cahiers du Cinema de 1953-57. Realizó su debut como director en 1958 con la obra de la nouvelle vague Le Beau Serge. Recibió el Oso de Oro en 19559 por Les Cousins. Además de películas de aventures y dramas psicológicos, ha realizado con frequencia thrillers en los que critica a la clase media francesa. Otras películas incluyen: Le cheval d’orgueil (1980), Une affaire de femmes (1988), La ceremonie (1995), Rien ne va plus (1997), Merci pour le chocolat (2000), La fleur du mal (2003), La demoiselle d’honneur (2004), L’ivresse du pouvoir (2006), Fille coupee en deux (2008).
Born in Paris in 1930. He studied literature and was a contributing editor of Cahiers du Cinema from 1953-57. He made his debut as director in 1958 with the nouvelle vague work, Le Beau Serge. He received the Golden Bear in 1959 for Les Cousins. Alongside adventure films and psychological dramas, he has regularly made thrillers in which he criticises the French middleclass.
