Inglaterra, 1899. un joven francés de 19 años, hospedado en casa de la señora Brown, conoce a sus dos hijas, Anna y Muriel Brown. Estas le llaman "El Continente". El joven Claude se enamora de Muriel y desea casarse con ella, pero las madres de ambos les obligan a separarse durante un año.
