LA LEYENDA DEL CURA DE BARGOTA

En Navarra hubo en tiempos una secta de sorguiñas. Una de ellas parió un hijo del diablo. El hijo fue a estudiar a Salamanca, frecuentó la cueva y regresó a su tierra, ejerciendo como cura en el pueblo de Bargota. Sus feligreses le veían acudir a la misa dominical como si viniera de recorrer un largo camino, con las botas blancas de nieve en verano y con la sotana mojada en plena sequía. El cura Juan se reunía en Viana con un grupo de brujos, mandados por la ciega Endregoto, y juntos se iban a celebrar sus aquelarres en las charas de Viana. Pero fueron descubiertos cuando murió en extrañas circunstancias el anciano Conde de Aguilar. Sin embargo el cura de Bargota se salvó del castigo inquisitorial, porque había avisado al Papa Alejandro VI de una conjura para asesinarle.

In Navarra, there used to be a witches sect. One of them gave birth to the devil’s son, who went to study in Salamanca, where he often went to a witches’lair, later returning to the village of Bargota as a priest.
