Jan Švankmajer nació en Praga en 1934. Estudió en la Escuela de Artes Aplicadas de Praga y más tarde en la Academia de las Artes Escénicas de la misma ciudad, en la rama de Marionetas. Después empezó a trabajar para el Teatro Semafor, donde fundó el Teatro de Máscaras antes de pasar al ya mítico teatro La Linterna Mágica. Bajo la influencia del teórico Vratislav Effenberger, Švankmajer evolucionó del manierismo que caracterizaba su trabajo inicial al surrealismo clásico, manifestado en primera instancia en su película Zaharada –El jardín-(1968), y se unió al Grupo Surrealista Checo. Se casó con Eva Švankmajerová, una pintora, ceramista y escritora surrealista de reconocimiento internacional. Švankmajer realizó su primera película en 1964, Poslední trik pana Schwarcewalldea a pana Edgara -El último truco-. Durante más de treinta años ha realizado algunas películas de animación memorables, e irrepetibles, ganándose el prestigio internacional como uno de los cineastas de animación más importantes del mundo e influyendo desde cineastas como Tim Burton a los Brothers Quay. Su brillante uso de la plastilina culminó en la película de 1982 Moznosti dialogu –Posibilidades de diálogo-. En 1988 Svankmajer completó su primer largometraje Alice –Alicia-, una adaptación ingeniosa y subversiva de Alicia en el país de las maravillas. Con sus largometrajes Faust –Fausto- (1994), Spiklenci slasti – Los conspiradores del placer- (1996), Otesánek –El pequeño Otik- (2000), el director se ha afianzado en su faceta de realizador de ficción apartándose de sus inicios en el cine de animación, pero prevalece, más que nunca, su visión estrictamente surrealista e increíblemente inventiva. En estos momentos está trabajando en un nuevo proyecto llamado Hmyz -Insectos-.

Jan Švankmajer was born in Prague in 1934. He studied at the College of Applied Arts in Prague and later in the Department of Puppetry at the Prague Academy of Performing Arts. Later he began working for Prague’s Semafor Theatre where he founded the Theatre of Masks before moving onto the Laterna Magika Puppet Theatre. Under the influence of theoretician Vratislav Effenberger, Švankmajer moved from the mannerism of his early work to classic surrealism, first manifested in his film The Garden (1968), and he joined the Czechoslovakian Surrealist Group. He was married to Eva Švankmajerová, an internationally known surrealist painter, ceramicist and writer. Švankmajer made his first film, The Last Trick, in 1964 and for over thirty years has made some of the most memorable and unique animated films ever made, gaining a reputation as one of the world’s foremost animators, and influencing filmmakers from Tim Burton to The Brothers Quay. His brilliant use of claymation reached its apotheosis with the stunning 1982 film Dimensions of Dialogue. In 1988 Švankmajer completed his first feature film, Alice, a characteristically witty and subversive adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, and with the ensuing feature films Faust (1994), Conspirators of Pleasure (1996) and with Little Otik (Otesánek) (2000), Švankmajer has moved further away from his roots in animation towards live-action filmmaking, though his vision remains as strikingly surreal and uncannily inventive as ever. He is currently working on his next project, Insects (Hmyz).
