Un viejo cardenal, Fernando, sabe que va a morir en menos de un año y le pide al Papa que le deje volver a España para encontrarse de nuevo con su pasado. Su antigua novia, con la que tuvo una hija, su hermano, su madre, le harán reflexionar y lo hundirán en el infierno, del que saldrá redimido.
