Realizado con motivo de la gran exposición organizada en Stuttgart sobre la dinastía de los Staufen. Kluge se sirve del material para avalar su tesis de que en los momentos más desesperados de su historia milenaria los alemanes siempre han depositado sus esperanzas en un salvador, como el retorno legendario del emperador Barbarroja en el cerro de "Kyffhäuser.

Produced with the Great Exhibition of Stuttgart in mind, the film is about the dynasty of the Staufern family. Kluge makes use of the material to underscore his theory that at the most desperate moments of their thousand years of history, the German people have always pinned their hopes on a saviour, like the legendary return of Emperor Barbarossa, sleeping on the mountain of Kyffhäuser.
