HOLA, ¿ESTÁS SOLA?

Icíar Bollain respiró un aire estupendo desde que nació. Sus padres -un ingeniero aeronáutico y una profesora de música con grandes inquietudes alrededor de la renovación de la educación- le transmitieron un profundo amor y respeto por cosas como la cultura, el arte, la belleza y la libertad. Con 15 años quiso hacerse actriz y protagonizó una película exquisita, El Sur, con una de las leyendas del cine europeo, Víctor Erice. Después, estudió Bellas Artes. Desde luego Icíar vivió una infancia y una adolescencia privilegiadas, incluido el hecho de compartirlas con Marina, su hermana gemela totalmente idéntica. Pero, además, tuvo la sensibilidad de disfrutar de ese privilegio y aprovecharlo para convertirse en un ser humano excelente, algo de lo que no todos los privilegiados son capaces.
Hay varias Icíar. La Icíar actriz ha sido la gran intérprete de películas como Sublet (1992, Chus Gutiérrez), Tierra y libertad (1995, Ken Loach), El techo del mundo (1995, Felipe Vega) o Leo (2000, José Luis Borau). La Icíar directora ha demostrado su enorme talento y su sentido de compromiso con la realidad en todo su cine. Su filmografía es una de las más estimulantes del cine español desde los años 90. Las películas que ha dirigido (Hola, estás sola; Flores de otro mundo; Te doy mis ojos; Mataharis; También la lluvia; Katmandú, un espejo en el cielo) son muy diferentes entre sí pero en ellas se pueden detectar algunas de sus principales inquietudes: su debilidad por los maltratados de la vida y de la historia, el interés por retratar el choque/encuentro de razas y culturas, su fascinación por los viajes, el afán de denunciar realidades sociales conflictivas o injustas o su extraordinario aprecio de valores como la educación, la libertad y la dignidad moral, los mismos de los que se empapó en su niñez. Y, luego, está la Icíar emblema de una generación y la Icíar símbolo de hasta qué punto las mujeres cineastas han contribuido a enriquecer el paisaje de nuestro cine. El 12 de junio de 2012, muy pocos días después de que reciba el premio Ciudad de Huesca, Icíar cumple 45 años. Qué 45 años tan bien vividos.

Icíar Bollain was a breath of fresh air since the day she was born. Her parents – an aeronautic engineer and a music teacher with a series of concerns around the renewal of education – passed on a profound love for culture, art, beauty and freedom. At the age of 15 she wanted to become an actress and starred in the film, El Sur, with one of the greatest legends in European cinema, Víctor Erice. Later, she studied Fine Arts. Icíar lived after all a privileged childhood and adolescence as well as growing up alongside her identical twin sister, Marina. She thus became an excellent human being, something that all those born with such privileges are able to do.
There are numerous Icíar. Icíar, the actress, has been the star of such films as Sublet (1992, Chus Gutiérrez), Tierra y libertad (1995, Ken Loach), El techo del mundo (1995, Felipe Vega) o Leo (2000, José Luis Borau). Icíar, the director, has shown her great talent and compromise with reality in her films. Her filmography is one of the most outstanding in Spanish cinema since the 1990’s. The films she has directed (Hola, estás sola; Flores de otro mundo; Te doy mis ojos; Mataharis; También la lluvia; Katmandú, un espejo en el cielo) are all very different yet they all show some of her concerns: her weakness for the mistreatment of life and history, her interest for portraying the clash/encounter of races and culture, her love for travelling, her eagerness for denouncing unjust or conflictive social realities or her extraordinary values for education, freedom and moral dignity, the same ones that she was steeped in her childhood. Then there’s the Icíar who is a symbol to a whole generation and the Icíar, symbol of how women have contributed to the enrichment of our cinema. On 12th June 2012, a few days after receiving the City of Huesca Award, Icíar will be 45. And 45 years very well lived.
