Un joven y eminente profesor de la Universidad de Bolonia se ve envuelto en una delicada investigación. Decide escapar de todo y termina recorriendo la apacible ribera del Po. Allí encuentra un edificio de piedra abandonado en el que se instala. En torno a su nuevo hogar se van tejiendo historias cotidianas de amor y amistad entre el profesor y las gentes del lugar. Asistimos a un momento de espontánea armonía en el que todo es posible.
A young and eminent professor at the University of Bologna finds himself at the centre of a difficult investigation. He turns his back on everything and ends up on the peaceful banks of the River Po, where he finds an old building and takes possession of it. Stories of friendship, of daily life and of love between the professor and the local inhabitants are woven around his new home, in a kind of spontaneous harmony with the moment, in which all possible realities exist.

Nació en Bérgamo (Italia) y empezó a dirigir películas mientras aún trabajaba en una central eléctrica. Además de cine, ha dirigido óperas, documentales y proyectos para la televisión. En 2004 recibió el Leopardo de Honor del Festival de Locarno. Participó por primera vez en la Semana en su quinta edición, con la película Il tempo si è fermato que recibió una Mención Especial del Jurado. Un año después presentó su cortometraje Tre fili fino a Milano y en 1962 se desplazó personalmente hasta Valladolid para presentar Il posto, que finalmente se hizo con la Espiga de Oro. En 1964 su cortometraje 700 anni se alzó con el Lábaro de Oro en el Festival, y volvió a participar en la Sección Oficial de largometrajes en 1966 con E venne un uomo, y en 1969 con Un certo giorno. En 1978, con L’albero degli zoccoli, se llevó la Palma de Oro en Cannes y una década después conquistó el León de Oro en Venecia por La leggenda del santo bevitore.
Born in Bergamo, Italy. Began directing films while still working at an electric plant. As well as films, he has directed operas, documentaries and projects made for television. In 2004 he received the Leopard of Honour at the Locarno Film Festival. He participated for the first time in Seminci in its fifth edition, with the film Il tempo si è fermato, which received a Special Mention by the Jury. A year later he presented his short film Tre fili fino a Milano, and in 1962 personally went to Valladolid to present Il posto, which received the Golen Spike. In 1964 his short film 700 anni won the Golden Lábaro at the Festival, and in 1966 participated in the feature films official section with E venne un uomo, and in 1969 with Un certo giorno. In 1978, he won the Palme d’Or in Cannes with L’albero degli zoccoli, and a decade later he received the Golden Lion in Venice for La leggenda del santo bevitore.
