Maria Zharko appears to be a simple woman, living a simple life. She has chosen to live in the Belarusian countryside. As the layers of her life delicately unfold, we sense that there is an odd complexity, something deeper. Regrets. Things are never quite as simple as they first appear. As Maria leafs through old love letters we sense that her life has passed her by. Choices once plentiful are now gone. Like her letters, Maria has faded with time. She is left to confront the harsh reality that it is she who has chosen a life of solitude, for better or for worse.
